About the Art Form

While Kutch is full of beautiful and colourful crafts, Lippan Work or Mud and Mirror Painting work is one of the most popular art forms in India. A traditional craft practised mainly by the women of Rabari and Kumbhar community from Kutch, Gujarat, Lippan work is created by combining camel dung and mud (that becomes clay on finer sieving).

When equal portions of dung and clay are mixed and kneaded to form the dough, its rested on a moist surface such as a wall to dry with natural air. Designs are handcrafted in shape of embroidery motifs and decorated with glittering mirrors.

A relief work created for the internal and external walls of houses, traditionally Lippan work was used to smartly channel natural light within the house, creating a beautiful effect and keeping the space bright naturally.

2. Keep it away from water, moisture and dampness.
