About the Art Form
About the Art Form
More than playing in mud, pottery has become popular as a hobby in recent times. This ancient craft dates back to 1700 BC and is one of the oldest art forms that signify the advent of modern civilization. Renowned from the discoveries of excavations at Mohenjo-Daro and other cities of Indus Valley Civilization, Terracotta pots and vessels are not only pure forms of artistic expressions, but crockery made through this art form is considered to have numerous health benefits!
Like many other handcrafts, making Terracotta products is a patient and painstaking job executed by highly skilled artisans. Terracotta is the clay used create terracotta pottery on a potter’s wheel. The fascinating process of lightly watering the clay, kneading to a dough and plying it on the wheel to form desired shapes gives its unique form. The object is then wood-fried or fired with combustible materials for proper hardening and the final “baked clay” known as Terracotta is glazed to keep the pores shut and keep water at bay.
While this art is practiced and displayed in many parts of India, Meryaki crafts bring you original and 100% handmade natural Terracotta products from Alwar, Rajasthan.
