About the Art Form

Longpi owes its name to two Manipuri villages from where the craft and technique of making this black earthenware originates. Longpi pottery is totally handmade (from moulding to firing) with no use of any machine or even a potter’s wheel, which makes each piece truly unique.

1. Black pottery is made using Serpentine stone and locally available alluvial clay found abundantly in the banks of the river in Longpi.
2. Artisans knead a clay dough which is then left to age for a few days and then shaped by hand or in a mould and left to dry under the shade.
3. Continual moistening, rubbing, and turning gradually smoothens and thins the walls and refines the shape.
4. Each piece is dried under shade and sun-dried further to properly dehydrate the clay. Thereafter, all pieces are heated at a temperature of 700 to 900 degree celsius.
5. On completion of firing process, earthenware pieces are taken out and polished with leaves from a local creeper (which lends a unique black colour to the pottery), and the polishing is finished off with beeswax.

Composition and Care

1. Gently dab clean with a soft sponge soaked in tepid water, apply mild detergent if necessary. Do not use stainless steel/ metal scrubber.
2. Dry thoroughly with clean cloth.
3. Do not use in microwave due to the cane accents.
4. Use paper tissue/ clean cloth between each product while stacking to avoid any scratches and keep its natural sheen intact.

This product is handmade and each piece is unique! Any design, colour or other inconsistencies or differences in displays on computers/laptops/phones from actual product is solely attributed to the versatility of handicrafts.
