About the Art Form
About the Art Form
Channapatna, a small town enroute Bangalore to Mysore is fondly known as India’s toy hub. Legend goes that Sultan brought Persian craftsmen to train local artisans on wooden toymaking. Since then, the craft has been adapted multifariously and adjusted to enhanced tastes, technology and tourism.
Ivory (locally known as Aale Mara), beechwood, neem are some of the popular choices as the wood is soft and allows for fine tuning and lacquering process. Close to 40 kms from Channpatna are forests which supply these supple wood trunks, which when cut are full of liquid that needs to be dried for ~3 months before any work can begin. A fresh cut of wood can span 0.5 to 3 inches handcrafted into custom shapes. Artisans fix a block of wood and hem away the edges, needling a few dots for precision every now and then usually completing a piece in under four minutes. These individual pieces are then stacked and joined at the assembly unit with pasting, pruning and sandpaper finishing.
Lacquer is an essential part of identity of these wooden toys. The lac is a natural resin secreted by an insect and scraped off the barks of trees, to mix with natural organic colours – turmeric for yellow, indigo for blue, red from vermillion, black from kaajal, brown from coffee powder and orange from flower powder. The colour is mixed with the wooden toys as they are being handcrafted with the thick concentrated bark.
Channapatna toys recently made a mark again on India’s map when our Prime Minister interacted with the toymakers from this traditional town on how to market and modernize this craft dating back to the time of Tipu Sultan.
