About the Art Form
About the Art Form
A two-dimensional art form, this beautiful tribal craft is one of the oldest styles of folk art in India. Originally, decorating the walls of tribal houses, Warli art gained popularity in the 1970’s, when Warli artist Jivya Soma Mashe and his son began pursuing the art form for artistic reasons and not merely for rituals and important festivals.
The use of basic materials for painting like rice paste and gum mixed with water for the white paint and a bamboo stick chewed on as a thin brush add to the authentic and rustic charm of this craft.
Mainly based on observation of nature and everyday rituals and activities of a simple life, Warli patterns have been adapted in many forms by designers, brands and curators across the world.
