About the Art Form

Kutch camel leather craft was originated by traditional leather craftsmen called the Meghwals from Rajasthan. Settling in Kutch, they brought with them their intricate craft style and traded leather from the Maldharis, who owned cattle in the region. Fusing the beautiful and fine Kutch embroidery work with cattle and camel leather, they created products that were essential for everyday use. Shoes, jackets, water-jugs and saddles were the common leather products that were produced. Today, the craft is kept alive by a handful of these artisan families who have evolved their products to suit and serve current requirements.
